How do you choose your wedding photographer ? It’s one of the first questions engaged couples ask, and one of the most important: the day goes by very fast, but the photos last a lifetime. Here are the four things I recommend checking before you sign.
1. Choose a style that feels like you
Before you even contact photographers, decide on the look you love. Every photographer has a different approach and style.
The three main approaches
- The classic style : posed portraits, polished group photos, a timeless result.
- The artistic style : original compositions and real work on light and retouching.
- The documentary style : moments captured as they happen, without staging, for natural, spontaneous memories.
Many couples want a mix of all three: documentary coverage throughout the day and a few more composed portraits. Practical tip: look at full weddings, not just the best shots in a portfolio. That’s where you see a photographer’s consistency, from getting ready to the reception.
2. Check reliability and professionalism
Once you’ve found the style, make sure the photographer can deliver on the day, whatever happens.
- Reviews from couples : on Google, Mariages.net or social media, read what they say about the relationship and the result, not just the rating.
- Experience : a photographer used to weddings handles the unexpected (delays, rain, difficult light) without you even noticing.
- Equipment and guarantees : backup equipment, double card backups and professional liability insurance, often required by venues.
3. Meet your photographer before the wedding
You don’t choose a photographer on their images alone: you’ll spend the whole day together. Rapport matters as much as the portfolio.
- Do you feel at ease? It’s essential to feel relaxed in front of the camera.
- Do they listen to what you want? They should understand your vision before suggesting their own.
- Do they ask the right questions? The schedule of the day, moments not to miss, important people, family traditions.

Tip: hold a full planning session a few weeks before the big day (timings, venues, list of group photos) and, if possible, a site visit. That’s what lets the photographer be in the right place at the right time.
4. Clarify everything before you sign
Before committing, check that everything is in writing in the quote and the contract.
- The service : hours of coverage, from getting ready to the reception, and what’s included (photo, video or both).
- Delivery times : usually allow a few weeks for edited photos and longer for a wedding film.
- Delivery format : online gallery, high-resolution download, optional album.
- Terms : deposit, cancellation, image usage rights.
Find the ideal photographer for your wedding
By following these four tips, you give yourself every chance of finding the professional who will tell the story of your day the way you imagine it.
